  THE GRAND MASQUERADE -Interview (2017)

Release Year: 2016

GEORGE: Welcome to BeRock Radio guys, the most melodic place! I am George, please make
yourself comfortable! We’re glad to have you here. Will you tell us a few words about how
“The Grand Masquerade” was founded, and how you came up with the band name?

TGM: Thanks for having us! The band was founded a few years back by John.
He had this studio project that he wanted to do something more with, so he brought a band together.
John brought in his childhood friend Freddy on vocals and bass, he also brought in Ivve whom he’d
been studying music production with. Ivve later studied with Martin and talked with John about bringing
him into the band, and so The Grand Masquerade was complete.

The name came from one of Ivves previous projects that never came to be. He called it The Grand Masquerade,
and it was John that really took a liking to the name and the potential behind it.

GEORGE: The look that you have chosen with the masks is very good-looking, and it gives us a sense of mystery.
How did you come up with that idea?

TGM: The idea was Johns and it was pretty much a given thing to do with a name like The Grand Masquerade.
It was easy to find an image that would suit us since the name made it very obvious.

GEORGE: Recently, you’ve released your first single track, “By My Side!”.
The track sounds amazing, and so is the video. Are you at that stage where you’re writing
material for your debut album?

TGM: Thank you so much. We’re happy that people like what we’ve put out! Yes, we are currently in the
process of writing songs for a full-length album. So far, we have a few candidates that sound really amazing,
but there’s still a long way to go.

GEORGE: While we’re talking about your video, rockers loved “By My Side!”.
Are you thinking of shooting another video for another track?

TGM: We are! When it will happen is not planned though, but we have some ideas about another video,
and hopefully we can make it happen in a not so distant future.

GEORGE: Can you tell us what the band is up to these days?

TGM: Right now, it’s pretty much a writing process that’s happening, rehearsing new ideas and coming up
with new song. We’re also promoting the video for "By My Side" in any way we can.

GEORGE: For the past 4-5 years, we’ve been seeing a bloom in Melodic Hard Rock.
Do you believe that rockers want more quality in the music and listen to more of this genre?
What’s your opinion on this?

TGM: Well, quality in music is of course something really important, however, it is very individual in what
people find good. It’s very hard to say since everyone likes different kinds of music, how it should sound and
how it should be produced. The type of rock genre that’s popular is very different in every part of the world.
Of course, we want people to listen to us and like what we do, but then again, the taste in music is very different
from person to person, so we can only hope that people appreciate what we’re doing and that they’ll stick around
for more.

GEORGE: A while ago, I spoke with Eric (Rivers) while he was still part of H.e.a.T., and I asked him what you do there
in Sweden and keep giving us these excellent bands with amazing musicians. “Is there something in the water?”,
I asked him, and he replied with “Hmm, it’s probably the beer!” (laughs!!) I’m asking if you can tell us your opinion
on the amazing music scene of Sweden.
You clearly have a lot of talented musicians there, what makes Sweden rise above the rest in the music industry?
Can you tell us what’s going on there that causes a new star to be born?

TGM: Sweden as a country is really good at pushing forward the creative arts.
We have a great system for state-driven music schools and also have contributions from the state for starting
creative groups, like a band. This kind of help is an awesome kick-off for any young artist.
Nevertheless, we do have kick ass beer, so that might help too!

GEORGE: Sweden, as I’ve said before, is famous about its music industry, especially the genre you support
(Melodic Hard Rock). Do you feel it’s difficult to meet such high standards of quality?

TGM: Well we only write what we like, the music we write is what we love to play and love to listen to.
Whether it lives up to the standards that people want is up to them, like we said before, the taste in music
is very personal. We play what we love and hope others will love it as well.

GEORGE: The music industry in the recent years has changed.
We see that a lot of people prefer digital purchases, which are more convenient, faster and more easily accessible.
What are your thoughts on the future of CDs?

TGM: It’s really easy to reach out to people through digital medias but CDs are still an important thing,
especially in the rock genre. People often wants to have and collect CDs from their favorite bands,
and as long as there are people collecting we’ll release our music as CDs as well as digital.

GEORGE: It’s not just the music industry that has changed over the years.
Nowadays, we see social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc...) become hugely widespread.
How much do these sites support a band and in what way?

TGM: The social media sites are crucial for bands today, they are great and very important tools to reach
out to people all over the world, it makes it all a lot easier.
However, there are so many band out there today that even if you use social medias to promote yourselves with,
you need to really do something different to stand out in the crowd.

GEORGE: Thank you for your time, I wish you all the best for the future! The last words are yours for this interview.
Feel free to say whatever you want to all BeRock’s Radio minizine readers!
